Subproject 06

Collection of Dead Animal and Fauna Samples for Pathological and Toxicological Analysis

Subproject 06 will carry out the necropsy of approximately 900 wild and domestic animals found dead or dying in rural communities and properties in the Paraopeba River basin and collect biological samples for future pathological and toxicological analyses. Among the objectives of this subproject is the identification of the animals' cause of death, that is, how they died, as well as the separation of the organs (liver, kidney, muscles), hair, feathers, feces and stomach contents so that this material can be properly examined . This collection is very important to determine how much the natural disaster that occurred in Brumadinho affected the mortality of animals in the vicinity of the Paraopeba River.

Methodological steps:

1st Step: Location of dead animals and their identification as to the place or property of origin, owner, species, breed, age, clinical signs presented.

2nd Step: Transfer of the information collected to the database of the “Patovet” program, already used at the Veterinary School.

3rd Stage: Necropsy of the animals, with the elaboration of a report for each one of them, with the description of the main macroscopic alterations verified.

4th Stage: Storage, organization and transport of the collected samples, which will be delivered to the Technical-Scientific Committee of the Brumadinho Project.

Meet the team!
