Subproject 37
Assessment and monitoring of morbidity and mortality in municipalities affected by the collapse of Dam I of Córrego do Feijão Mine
The general objective of subproject 37 is to study and identify the likely impacts on the health of populations affected by the environmental disaster caused by the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão mine dam, in Brumadinho. The subproject will describe patterns and trends in the epidemiological profile of morbidity and mortality of the population of municipalities affected by the disruption and of control municipalities located around them, from the collection of secondary data in the period 2010 to 2019. In addition, the subproject will assess the pattern and geographic dispersion of morbidity and mortality in the period and to investigate associations of demographic, socioeconomic and environmental factors with morbidity and mortality indicators in the affected municipalities and controls.
The objectives of the subproject are:
-
Analyze the distribution of hospitalizations and general mortality, in the indicated period, according to demographic characteristics of the populations;
-
Standardize morbidity and mortality rates by age and sex;
-
Describe and compare whether the data obtained before are related to socioeconomic (income), environmental indicators and the health care network of the municipalities;
-
Analyze data spatially from the reference population of the 19 municipalities and 38 neighboring municipalities;
-
To analyze the associations between demographic, socioeconomic and environmental factors with morbidity and mortality indicators in the affected municipalities and controls, as well as to estimate the morbidity and mortality risks according to these indicators in space and time.
Methodological Steps
Step 1: Extraction of data from the databases of selected indicators;
Step 2: Database construction, organization and cleaning;
Step 3: Data analysis and construction of indicators (coefficients and rates) of morbidity and mortality selected in the reference population, in the indicated period;
Step 4: Analysis of associations between socioeconomic and demographic variables and indicators (coefficients and rates) of morbidity and mortality selected in the reference population, in the indicated period;
Step 5: Analysis of morbidity and mortality clusters for selected indicators in the reference population, in the indicated period;
Step 6: Interpretation of results to assess the likely impacts of the collapse of Dam I at Córrego do Feijão Mine in Brumadinho on the health of the affected population;
Step 7: Production of two partial reports regarding the progress of activities in the 2nd and 3rd months. In addition, a video aimed at the general population will be created in which the results of this research will be presented in non-scientific language.
