Meet the Subprojects of the Socioeconomic area

Currently, nine subprojects make up the Socioeconomic area of the Brumadinho UFMG Project. The subprojects investigate various aspects of the relationship between the social and the economic that may have been impacted by the collapse of the BI Dam - Córrego do Feijão Mine in Brumadinho, MG. The following researches fall into this category:
- Sub 03- Caracterização e Avaliação da População Atingida Pelo Rompimento da Barragem da Mina do Córrego do Feijão em Brumadinho, Minas Gerais;
- Subprojeto 41+42 - Avaliação da produção, do trabalho e de mercados;
- Subprojeto 43 - Caracterização das atividades produtivas informais;
- Subprojeto 45 - Avaliação da Estrutura e da Articulação Regional;
- Subprojeto 46 - Sistema de informação Nota Fiscal eletrônica;
- Subprojeto 47 - Avaliação da Situação Fiscal dos Municípios Atingidos;
- Subprojeto 49 - Análise dos Impactos nos Serviços de Saúde
- Subprojeto 50 - Serviços de Proteção Social;
- Subprojeto 65 - Análise dos Impactos no Turismo em Brumadinho e na região atingida.
As chamadas do campo socioeconômico buscam articular grupos de pesquisa e pesquisadores em trabalhos interdisciplinares, desenvolvidos em rede e que buscam uma complementaridade entre si, com o intuito de entender os impactos do rompimento. Os resultados desses estudos orientará a tomada de decisão do Juízo e informará para a sociedade o que ocorreu na região e os impactos nas populações atingidas.
Os primeiros produtos desenvolvidos pelas equipes dos subprojetos da categoria socioeconômico a Professora Claudia Mayorga, integrante do CTC e Reitora de Extensão da UFMG, comenta sobre a relevância dos produtos. “Hoje o Projeto Brumadinho UFMG vem sistematizando os primeiros resultados e produtos das pesquisas socioeconômicas que ajudam a lançar luz sobre aspectos relevantes do desastre e seus desdobramentos. Destaco que os estudos foram desenvolvidos por meio de metodologias comprometidas com o rigor científico. Até o presente momento, houve a formação de oito equipes interdisciplinares que se dedicam a estudar diferentes objetos de pesquisas no campo socioeconômico. A UFMG e o Projeto Brumadinho UFMG consideram que é parte de sua missão o apoio e um olhar diferenciado da universidade para os grupos vulneráveis e invisibilizados, contribuindo para que as decisões judiciais e as recuperações possam ocorrer baseadas em informações geradas a partir de estudos científicos" , disse ela.

According to the CTC coordinators, the delivery of results and products has been impacted by the pandemic of COVID-19, which required the readjustment of the work and research methodologies. The forecast is that in the coming months the first results and partial products will be delivered and that, due to the large volume of information raised by the socioeconomic sector studies, they will be crucial for the objectives of the Brumadinho-UFMG Project to be achieved.
According to Professor Ricardo Ruiz, member of the CTC and supervisor of the research that makes up the socioeconomic category of the Brumadinho UFMG Project, the integration of skills and efforts in research in the area may bring to the Judgment and to all those involved with the dam breach important information for understanding its impacts and possible consequences in the coming years. "Very soon, the subprojects in the socioeconomic area will bring information and analysis in multiple dimensions (salary, employment, production, distribution, etc.), which will broaden the understanding of the impact on the lives of the affected populations. In other disasters and dramatic events such as these, studies, surveys and analyses have not occurred with this scale and scope, which made it difficult to understand what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. The research can assist in the actions to recover the economy of the municipalities along the Paraopeba River and, by not being restricted to one sector or specific aspect, will be able to transversally support various actions to repair and compensate for the impacts suffered by the populations," highlighted Ricardo Ruiz.

According to the CTC, the nine research coordinators participated directly in the development of the study. As a result of this effort, the first ones reporting the development of the research are being finalized and will soon be handed over to the Judge of the case.
